Full Size Bed Frame Dimensions Guide

Fact checked by Jonathan Eilenberg, CPE

Depending on the style of bed frame you choose, a standard full bed frame is around 56–60” wide and 76–80” long.

While you can technically sleep on a mattress on the floor, we’d argue that no bed is complete without a matching bed frame. However, if you’re going to rest your mattress on a frame, you need to consider that frame’s size when planning and arranging your bedroom.

To help you prepare for the footprint of a new bed and frame, we’ve created this helpful guide on full size bed frame dimensions.

Understanding Full Size Bed Frame Dimensions

First things first: Let’s talk about the size of a full bed frame — and what that means for your bedroom.

Standard Dimensions

A full mattress, also known as a “double bed” measures 53” wide and 75” long. That means your full bed frame dimensions will be at least 53” x 75”. However, in almost all cases, the frame will be larger than the mattress itself.

Bed frame dimensions vary between manufacturers and styles, but, in general, you can expect a full bed frame to come in at 56–60” wide and 76–80” long.

Room Size Considerations

To give yourself enough space to move around in the room with a full size bed and frame, we recommend a minimum room size of 10 feet x 11 feet.1 Consider going even larger if you plan to furnish the room with essential bedroom furniture like:

  • A dresser
  • A nightstand
  • A lamp
  • A desk

Comparing Full Size Bed Frames to Other Bed Sizes

Maybe a full bed with a frame is perfect for your bedroom. Then again, maybe it’s not. There’s only one way to find out: Let’s compare a full size bed frame to other bed frames.

Full vs. Twin

A twin mattress is 38” wide and 75” long — the same length as a full, with slightly less width.1 That means a twin bed frame will measure between 38–43” in width and 77–80” in length.

Full vs. Twin XL

A twin XL is a longer version of a twin, with a frame measuring 38–43” wide and 80–83” long. Twin XL beds are ideal for taller solo sleepers with limited space.

Full vs. Queen

A queen mattress measures 60” wide and 80” long.1 Add a few inches of frame on either side, and you’re left with final bed frame measurements of 62–67” by 81–85”.

Full vs. King

The bigger the mattress, the larger the frame (and the more space for pillows). A king mattress comes in at a whopping 76” wide and 80” long.1 The frame, then, will measure 78–82” in width and 82–85” in length.

Ideal Users for Full Size Bed Frames

If you’re still convinced that a full bed and frame is your perfect match, it’s time to put that theory to the test. After all, just because a bed and frame fit in your space, doesn’t mean that’s the right bed setup for you.

Who are the ideal candidates for a full bed? There are two answers to that question.

Single Sleepers

In most cases, full beds are geared toward solo sleepers. They’re compact enough to fit in tight spaces, yet wider and more comfortable than a twin bed. With that in mind, a full bed and frame is perfect for:

  • Children
  • Teens
  • College students
  • Guests

However, there’s a catch: If you’re six feet tall or above, you’ll probably find a twin bed too short.

Couples

If you don’t mind getting up close and personal, you can also make a full bed and frame work as a couple. Consider a full bed if you have a studio apartment or a small bedroom.

Because there won’t be much space or airflow, you may want to invest in some cooling bed sheets.

Types of Bed Frames for Full Size Beds

As mentioned, the exact size of your full bed frame will depend on its style. Different designs and headboard types will change your frame’s overall footprint.

Some of the different types of beds you’ll encounter are:

  • Panel beds – A panel bed frame supports the mattress on a set of wooden or model slats. These frames tend to be low-profile, closely matching the dimensions of the bed on top. Learn about the difference between a panel bed vs platform bed in our blog.
  • Daybeds – Think of a daybed as a sort of bench-bed hybrid. The drawers and arms of a daybed add some width and length to the frame’s footprint.
  • Adjustable beds – With an adjustable bed frame, you can lift and angle your bed — an especially handy trick if you have acid reflux or sleeping problems. Because they hug the bed, these frames closely match the width and length of the mattress.
