The Mattress in a Box: Why You’ll Love It

July 29, 2020 | Casper Editorial Team

While a mattress in a box may sound self-explanatory, there’s more to it than just being a mattress inside of a box.

Not to worry — we’re here to explain what makes a mattress in a box different from your typical mattress. We’ll also cover the benefits of choosing a mattress in a box and what you can expect when unboxing.

What Is a Mattress in a Box?

A mattress in a box is just like a regular mattress. The only difference is that it’s compressed in an air-sealed bag and rolled tight before shipping. It’s then placed into a box about the size of a mini-fridge for shipping. Upon arrival, this tidy box is much easier to maneuver than a traditional mattress. This sort of purchase allows you the flexibility of picking your mattress online and having it easily delivered to your door.

Clearly, an innerspring mattress is not able to be rolled into this compact form. The most common boxed mattress type is memory foam, but there are many boxed latex foam and hybrid mattress options on the market as well.

Mattress in a box options are available for all standard bed sizes. In most cases, a boxed mattress can be used with the bed frame and box spring you already have.

How Does a Mattress in a Box Work?

A mattress in a box offers an updated version of the original mattress shopping model that eliminates the need to visit a store. When you receive the rolled mattress, all you’ll need to do is pull it out of its packaging, lay it flat, and let it expand. The foam structure of the mattress ensures your boxed mattress will quickly regain its original shape once unrolled. The entire process allows us to cut out the traditional mattress delivery and pass the savings on to you.

The Benefits of a Mattress in a Box

Convenience

The ability to order online allows you to compare prices and features while mattress shopping without leaving your home. Once you choose your perfect mattress, simply wait for it to be delivered. Since it arrives in a compact box, you can easily pick it up and move it wherever you need.

Easy Assembly

Worried about how to move a mattress? You don’t have to worry about lugging a bulky mattress up or down stairs or fitting it through narrow door frames. The tidy box form makes it much easier to transport the mattress to your bedroom.

Variety

Opting for a box mattress over a traditional mattress doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice versatility. Choose between our Original, Nova Hybrid, and Wave Hybrid mattress options to find the firmness level that supports your preferred sleeping position.

Buy Directly from the Brand

The ability to buy your new mattress directly from the manufacturer, rather than from a mattress store, gives you benefits like extended warranties and free trial periods. Our customer service team is also available 24/7 to help you if you run into any issues or aren’t sure which mattress type to get.

Cost Savings

Buying a box mattress from an online mattress company cuts out the middleman, which results in cost savings for you. You also don’t need to worry about paying additional fees for shipping and delivery from a mattress store. Choosing a boxed mattress allows you to get the same high-quality mattress you would get from a store, but oftentimes at a lower price.

How to Buy a Mattress in a Box

Here’s how to buy the perfect mattress in a box.

1. Set a Budget

First, determine how much you’re willing to spend on your new sleep haven. On average, we spend a third of our lives in bed, so it’s worth investing in a high-quality mattress.

2. Choose Mattress Size

Ask yourself what size mattress you need for your space. If you have a small space to work with, a twin or full is the perfect option. If you have a large room to fill, consider a Queen, King, or California King.

3. Choose Firmness Level

Firm or soft is up to personal preference. Just make sure you get a mattress that is designed with zoning for proper support. Our mattresses are engineered with Zoned Support™, or different ergonomic zones that help keep your spine aligned throughout the night.

4. Decide on a Mattress Type

Mattress in a box options often come in foam and hybrid options. Ultimately, the choice is up to your preference, but here’s the difference between these types of mattresses:

  • Foam — Foam mattresses combine layers of different density foams for softness and support. They are softer on side sleepers and absorb motion of restless sleepers.

Hybrid — A hybrid mattress is a multi-layer bed that combines the benefits of both springs and foam. It provides the perfect blend of pressure relief and support.

How to Choose Your Mattress Size

If you’re wondering which size mattress you should buy, you’ve come to the right place. You’ll need to take into account the size of your bedroom, if you’ll be sharing a bed and available space in your bedroom.

You should take your height and width into consideration when choosing a mattress type as well. For example, an individual who is shorter than six feet would likely feel comfortable in a twin. Those taller than six feet would feel most comfortable in a King size mattress or a California King mattress. We have our mattress in a box in these six mattress sizes so you’re covered no matter what you need: twin, twin xl, full, Queen, King, and California King.

Our mattress sizes are below to help you decide.

  • Twin Mattress — 38″ x 75″ | 96.5 X 190.5cm
  • Twin XL Mattress — 38″ x 80″ | 96.5 X 203cm
  • Full Mattress — 53″ x 75″ | 134.5 X 190.5cm
  • Queen Mattress — 60″ x 80″ | 152.5 X 203cm
  • King Mattress — 76″ x 80″ | 193 X 203cm
  • California King Mattress — 72″ x 84″ | 183 X 213cm
