What makes the best mattress?
Springs vs memory foam vs hybrid foam — learn how mattress materials and construction affect your sleep.
Why not springs?
The spring mattress was invented in the 1800s — so it’s safe to say it’s an outdated technology. They create uncomfortable pressure points, are more prone to wear and tear, and offer little motion isolation.
What’s wrong with just memory foam?
Memory foam mattresses are popular for their adaptive support, but sleepers complain about sinking too deep into the surface. This makes you sleep hot and wake up feeling stuck.
What’s great about hybrid foam?
All Casper mattresses feature a deliberate combination of foams, called a hybrid foam construction. This creates a dynamic surface that emphasizes the best properties of each material and allows for balanced comfort and temperature regulation.

The development of the Casper mattress
The different types of foam in a Casper mattress
The Casper is composed of four distinct foam layers, with a total height of 24 cm. Those layers include:
- Latex foam (approx. 4 cm)
- Memory foam (approx. 4 cm)
- Transition foam (approx. 4 cm)
- Base foam (approx. 12 cm)
In our experience, these layers of foam offer a much higher point of comfort and elasticity relative to spring mattresses. In more detail, the top latex layer is slightly springy, which allows for easy movement and regular weight shifts on surface of the mattress. It is also highly breathable, which ensures good air circulation around you as you sleep. The second layer, made of memory foam, adapts to the shape of your body and relieves the pressure points at the shoulders and hips, while the bottom layer is a thick foam that provides the necessary support for the mattress. The transition foam, as its name suggests, acts as an intermediary between the supple memory foam and the firm bottom layer, ensuring your spine is well-positioned, but also allowing your shoulders and hips to sink in sufficiently.
What the right mattress can do for you
A mattress for all sleeping positions
Most people sleep on their sides. For these sleepers, most of their body weight is concentrated on the shoulders, the hips and the legs. It is important for the shoulders and hips to be able to sink into the mattress, so that the waist is supported and the spine can form a straight line. This prevents you from waking up in the morning with a stiff neck or back pain. The shoulder and pelvis zone of the mattress should be yielding and relieve pressure to ensure an ergonomic lying position and allow your spinal discs to regenerate overnight.
If you tend to you lie on your back at night it’s important that your shoulders and hips do not stick out and leave a hollow in your back. As with side sleepers, they should sink into the mattress so that your spine is supported and can relax in its natural S-position.
A firmer mattress is recommended for those who sleep on their stomach. Sinking deeply into the mattress around the stomach area is not ideal, since this prevents you from moving and leaves your back hollowed. This can lead to shoulder problems and neck tension.
- Alternating sleepers
What if you adopt several different positions over the course of a night? Not everyone has a single defined sleeping position, instead alternating between their back, side and stomach. We actually change our sleeping position close to 50 times a night, according to a study conducted in our San Francisco lab.
Sleeping well as a couple
The Casper mattress is offered in a range of sizes to suit your needs sleeping individually or as a couple.
Our mattresses are available online in the following sizes:

- Super King Size Mattress
Our Single Mattress begins at dimensions of 90 x 190 CM, while our Super King measures at 180 x 200 CM. Depending on how much space you need, there are also a number of options in between. Regardless of size, the foam combination of Casper's mattresses allows for a high point elasticity, which optimizes isolation for individual sleepers on the mattress. In this case, any movement from another person or object is largely non-affective to the position and tranquillity of a person sleeping on a Casper mattress. In fact, with the Casper mattress you hardly notice it at all when the person sleeping next to you moves.
