What to look out for when buying a mattress
What makes the best mattress?
Springs vs memory foam vs hybrid foam — learn how mattress materials and construction affect your sleep.
Why not springs?
The spring mattress was invented in the 1800s — so it’s safe to say it’s an outdated technology. They create uncomfortable pressure points, are more prone to wear and tear, and offer little motion isolation.
What’s wrong with just memory foam?
Memory foam mattresses are popular for their adaptive support, but sleepers complain about sinking too deep into the surface. This makes you sleep hot and wake up feeling stuck.
What’s great about hybrid foam?
All Casper mattresses feature a deliberate combination of foams, called a hybrid foam construction. This creates a dynamic surface that emphasizes the best properties of each material and allows for balanced comfort and temperature regulation.
Buying a mattress shouldn’t be confusing
If you’re currently shopping for a mattress and you’re overwhelmed by the choice and finding it hard to decide which one to buy – we get it. The selection is huge and it’s tough sifting through the different types to find the one for you - even within the bed-in-a-box category. Thick or thin? Soft, firm or medium firm? Very firm or pretty soft? Two, three or four support zones? And who knows what the advantages and exact differences are between a spring core, latex and memory foam? The answer is - very few people. Luckily, we’ve done the research for you. That’s why our sleep experts and engineers at the Casper labs in San Francisco have worked to develop two incredibly supportive mattresses to suit a huge range of body types. Our mattresses react to your body, mould to it, but without sinking in and sagging like many other foam mattress - we focus on support and durability, so it will be just as supportive in 10 years time! Finding the right one for you
When we founded Casper 4 years ago, we wanted to create the perfect mattress for a great night’s rest. Our team of engineers, led by co-founder Jeff Chapin, created over 150 prototypes for both the Casper and the Essential. They’ve studied sleep, temperature, support of different body types and positions and created products that meet your needs. They’ve combined layers of different foams that work together to mould to your body while being incredibly supportive, we’ve even included contour cuts that allow your shoulders to sink in ever so slightly - which allows your spine to remain straight during the night. For the ultimate comfort, we developed the Casper. Then we created our Essential which is supportive, functional and accessible to everyone.
Take your time to look at both models online, compare them and find out more - you can even get in touch with our customer team if you have specific questions - they’re real experts! Then we’ll deliver it in 2-3 days and you can test the mattress of your choice for a 100 night trial period in the cosiness of your own bedroom – without salesmen hovering around. Whether you’re young or old, a back, side or stomach sleeper, we promise restful sleep for everyone - or your money back. We believe in the quality of our mattresses which is why we take the risk and give you the opportunity to test them for 100 nights. Why are we so sure you like our mattresses? We pride ourselves on being experts– we’ve researched and developed our products to perfection for years – so all you have to do is enjoy the simplicity and comfort of the Casper customer experience.
Design & engineering
Before developing our products, we always do extensive research. What makes great sleep? We found out that a high quality, supportive mattress needs four things: comfort, support, temperature regulation and durability. Unlike springs – which can create painful pressure points - we chose to develop our own foams and fabrics to answer these needs. We work tirelessly on our products so that you can buy the best at Casper. We’re not the only ones who think so – you can have a look at our endorsements here and our outstanding customer reviews here.
Structure & support
Each of our mattresses has a unique structure that guarantees long-lasting comfort. There’s no sag and we have a 10-year guarantee. Here is an overview of the structure of the two mattress models, so you can understand what goes into the best mattresses.
Material & foam layers: the Casper
The Casper is an award-winning mattress and is made of four different layers measuring 24cm in height:
- Open-cell foam (ca 4 cm)
- Memory foam (ca 4 cm)
- Transition foam (approx. 4 cm)
- Foundation foam (approx. 12 cm)
These four layers were created as a result of over 150 prototypes and research into the perfect sleep support to ensure the ultimate comfort and a unique weightless feeling. Foam mattresses are far more elastic and flexible than mattresses with springs which don’t mould to your shape and support your specific body type. The top open-cell foam layer is slightly springy which allows you to change position seamlessly. It is also very breathable meaning the air can circulate around you and prevent overheating. The memory foam layer underneath adapts to your body shape and relieves pressure points such as shoulders and hips. The foundation foam layer is very dense and provides a high levels of support that complements the other layers. And the transition foam, ensures a frictionless transition between the cuddly memory foam and the firm, lowest layer. This design guarantees that your spine is well aligned while your shoulders and hips sink in just slightly to encouraging the alignment.
Material & foam layers: the Essential
The Casper Essential guarantees comfort with its minimalist design and two layers of foam. It is 18cm thick and consists of long-lasting foams with contour cuts to support your body.
- Open-cell top foam (6 cm)
- Foundation foam (12 cm)
Our Casper Essential mattress focusses on long-lasting quality at a fair price. The top open-cell foam layer circulates the air and the contour cuts in the foundation foam layer allow the shoulders to sink in while the hips and spine are supported. This two-layer construction supports all body types and positions allowing for high levels of comfort and a carefree rest.
What the right mattress can do for you
Good mattresses are essential for a good night’s sleep because - on average, you spend a third of your life sleeping, dreaming and recharging. When you’ve had a good rest, you can live your best, most productive life. But it's not quantity that counts, the quality is also highly important. The quality of your sleep relies heavily on the quality of your mattress which should offer you and your back enough support. It’s during your sleep that your body gets rid of toxins to help prevent disease and renew your cells. What more reason do you need to in a good night’s rest with a Casper mattress?
How we support all sleeping positions
No matter which position you sleep in, you need to have the right support from your mattress to regenerate. Did you know that you shrink two to three centimeters during the day? This is because your vertebral discs lose fluid and only fill up again at night. For that to work, your spine needs to be aligned and fully supported. There are three distinct positions, which can be divided into these categories: side, back and belly sleeper. All three positions have different support requirements – luckily the Casper engineering team took all three positions and their needs into account when designing our mattresses
A lot of people would classify themselves as side-sleepers. When you’re lying on your side, most of your body weight pushes on your shoulders and hips and legs. This means it’s really important to find a mattress that supports your shoulders and hips as well as your waist and allows your spine to form a straight line. This prevents neck ache and back pain. The supportive zones of the Casper mattress are flexible and pressure-relieving allowing you to lie ergonomically and recover overnight.
If you lie on your back, it’s important that your shoulders and hips sink in just slightly so that your spine can remain flat rather than forming a hollow. Luckily for your, this is exactly the kind of support the Casper mattress gives so your spine is fully supported and relaxed in the natural S-position.
If you lie on your stomach, a firmer mattress with a high-level of support is recommended.
The multi-position sleeper
A lot of us lie in all sorts of different positions during the night. In fact many people change their position up to 50 times throughout the night. It’s true! At Casper we did a study – and we filmed it. So, when we talk about our sleep position – we’re actually talking about the position we fall asleep in. In reality, we all need a mattress that supports all positions. Luckily for you, both the Casper and the Casper Essential offer a huge amount of support and comfort however you lay . The advantage of a Casper is that it distributes your weight, relieves pressure points and supports you sufficiently across your entire body. In addition, the memory foam retains its original shape and always bounces back when you are not lying on the mattress – preventing sagging. The Casper Essential is also highly durable, even without memory foam, thanks to the two-layer construction and the high quality of foam we use in both layers.
Sleep well in bed with two people
