The Best in Rest and Recovery
These specialized performance vests are worn during training sessions throughout the season, providing insight into how players are applying coaching feedback and improving over time. They measure the movements and orientation of the player as well as the magnitude of their dynamic movements on the field. By gathering this data, supporting staff are able to be more precise in how they care for and support these athletes over the season.
A Simple Equation (sort of)
Using a specialized GPS, gyrometer, and small accelerometer, the vests track the player as they practice. GPS data is used to measure the distances, speeds, and time that a player is training. This is then broken down into other metrics that describe density of training and the overall volume of training. Accelerometer and gyrometer data are aggregated to understand the mechanical load of movement in training. Together, these describe a part of the “External Load” each player encounters in a session or game
Player Management & Care
This data helps the staff supporting the players (coaches, physical therapists, athletic trainers, sport scientists, strength and conditioning coaches) to understand the “load” that each player is encountering and how they expect the player to respond. By monitoring External Load, staff is able to tell if an athlete is adapting positively or negatively.
Practice Makes Perfect
The load measured helps them quantify the amount of training they can do in real detail and the support for this is built on a bedrock of recovery between sessions.
Positive Adaptation Responses
How much “External Load” does a professional soccer player encounter?
In a game, players cover anywhere between 9,000 yards to 14,000 yards, completing between 800 and 1500 of those yards at “high speed” (>12.3 mph), and can reach maximum speeds of 23.6 mph. They experience hundreds of accelerations and decelerations that are around 5-8 G-forces.
