King Size Bed Frame Dimensions Guide

Fact checked by Jonathan Eilenberg, CPE

When purchasing a bed frame, remember that its dimensions can increase by 1 to 6 inches depending on the design. A traditional king size mattress is 76”x80”, so a typical king size bed frame is 78-82”x82-85”.

Creating a sleep sanctuary in your bedroom starts with buying the right mattress. And for some, that means having ample sleeping space.

For many, a King or a California King is all the space they need. King size bed frame dimensions are around 78-82 inches by 82-85 inches to accommodate a 76-by-80-inch mattress.1 California King size mattresses are 72 by 84 inches,1 so Cal King bed frames are usually 72-79″x86-89″. As the largest standard-sized mattresses available, they offer ample room for space-loving sleepers.

But if bigger is better for you, there are six mattress sizes larger than a King or California King, from 84 by 84 inches2 to a whopping 9 by 9 feet.1

Whether you sleep alone or pile the whole family into one bed, our size guide is here to help you find the right oversized mattress for your most comfortable night’s sleep.

What Is the Size of a King Size Bed Frame and Mattress?

Bigger beds, starting with queens and standard king size mattresses, became popular post-World War II.3 Economic prosperity, along with larger houses, made bigger beds more appealing.2 An increase in average height may have also played a part (only 4% of American men were six feet tall or taller in the 1900s. By 1959, 20% of American men were six feet tall).2

Today’s mattress market has made purchasing beds larger than standard sizes easier and more affordable, along with the proper size bedding.

King size bed dimensions are 76 by 80 inches,1 which translates to approximately 6 feet 4 inches by 6 feet 8 inches. Standard King size bed frame dimensions typically run 78-82 inches by 82-85 inches, which may include a box spring or a mattress foundation for the bed to sit on, legs to lift the bed and its frame off the floor, and a headboard for a decorative and supportive element.

Other King Size Bed Frame Dimensions

There are two types of king beds and four “oversized” king mattress options available on the market today.

Two sizes are considered the largest standard mattress options:

  • King bed: 76 by 80 inches1
  • California King (or Cal King) bed: 72 by 84 inches1

The four oversized mattress sizes include1:

  • Wyoming King: 84 by 84 inches
  • Texas King: 80 by 98 inches
  • Alberta King: 96 by 96 inches
  • Alaskan King: 108 by 108 inches

Split King Bed Frame Size

King size beds can be a great choice for couples who need plenty of space to sleep. So what is a Split King mattress? For couples who require space and drastically different mattress types, a Split King could be a great choice. The Split King has the same dimensions as a standard King4 bed but is made up of two individual mattresses (roughly the size of a twin mattress). These beds allow couples to choose the exact mattress for their specific needs while still sharing a bed.

Couples looking to take their comfort to the next level might even consider an adjustable bed frame, which can raise and lower certain sections of the bed to create the optimal sleeping environment for each person.

California King Bed Frame Size

A California King (affectionately known as a Cal King) is very similar to a standard King, though it is slightly more narrow and a little taller. These dimensions (72 by 84 inches)1 make the Cal King a rectangular shape rather than a square. A bed frame for a Cal King bed is generally 72-79″x86-89″.

You may want a Cal King if:

  • You’re on the taller side and need more room for your feet
  • Your bedroom is narrow rather than wide
  • You prefer your own space at night (rather than the intimacy of a queen mattress)

Wyoming King Bed Frame Size

The Wyoming King is the smallest of the oversized mattresses. It’s the size up from a Cal King and, at 84 by 84 inches,1 goes back to a true square shape rather than a rectangle. A bed frame for this type of king should at least be 85”x85”.

A Wyoming King is a great choice for:

  • Couples who co-sleep with their child
  • Couples with a standard-size primary suite5 who want a little more room1
  • Large but square primary suites, where the bed can take center stage

Texas King Bed Frame Size

Though the Texas King is narrower than the Wyoming, it is significantly longer than the Wyoming and the Cal King: 14 inches longer, to be exact.

Choose a Texas King if:

  • You’re over six feet tall
  • You sleep with a pet or two at the foot of the bed

Alberta King Bed Frame Size

Alberta king mattress dimensions run 96 by 96 inches1 — that’s 8 feet by 8 feet. Therefore, your bed frame size for an Alberta king should be at least 97”x97”.

You’ll like an Alberta King if:

  • You have a big family that enjoys sleeping together
  • You have several large dogs
  • Both you and your partner are large people who want plenty of room

Alaskan King Bed Frame Size

The Alaskan King is the biggest bed size on the market today. At 108 by 108 inches (translated to 9 by 9 feet)1, it dwarfs the standard King. Based on those measurements, an Alaskan king bed frame should be at least 109”x109”.

You’ll like an Alaskan King if6

  • Your bed doubles as a “fun space” for family get-togethers and slumber parties2
  • You have multiple children who co-sleep with you2

Who Should Consider a King Size Bed?

There are a number of reasons why you may want a bigger bed. Maybe you enjoy the feeling of spreading all the way out without dangling limbs off the side, or you co-sleep with partners, kids, and pets and don’t want to feel crowded out.

Here are a few other reasons why a King bed or larger could be a good choice for you:

  • You’re a large person – If standard beds leave you with your ankles hanging off the edge, or the narrower dimensions make you feel cramped, then a King or oversized mattress can give you the room you need to feel supported.
  • You sleep with accessories – Do you enjoy nesting with pillows? A larger mattress gives you room to have all the bedding extras you want.
  • You (or your partner) are light sleepers – “Motion isolation” is a term that describes how a mattress prevents movement transfer (i.e., when your partner tosses around and you feel it, too). Larger beds isolate movement better, so if you or your partner wake up every time the other moves, a King could help you both sleep more soundly.
  • You (or your partner) move in your sleep – If you or your partner roll around, kick, or spread all the way out during sleep, a bigger bed offers plenty of space to do so without disturbing each other.
  • Your bed is everyone’s bed – If you’re sharing the bed with many — pets and/or children, for example — a King size bed or oversized mattress can offer each person (or dog or cat) the proper amount of room without crowding each other out.

Things to Consider When Shopping for a King Size Bed Frame

Before you go shopping for your new King or oversized mattress, there are a few things you’ll want to consider:

  • Availability – While King size beds are fairly easy to acquire, oversized mattresses (as well as their bedding and bed frames) can be difficult to find. You may need to shop around to find what you need or have a bed custom-made.
  • Cost – The bigger the bed, the higher the price tag. The largest mattress size, the Alaskan King, averages between $2,500 and $6,000.1 While you shouldn’t skimp out on the best mattress for your needs, be prepared to spend at least a couple hundred dollars on a mattress.
  • Space – Do you have room for a large bed in your home? Consider maneuverability and accessibility to the bed. You want to get in and out with ease and reach things like light switches, windows, doors, and closets. A room size that’s 8 feet wide and 10 feet long can accommodate a standard King bed.
  • Mobility – A King bed or oversized mattress is not a good choice for people who frequently move, as they can be heavy, hard to maneuver, and difficult to transport.

Give Your Sleep the Royal Treatment

There are many considerations that can go into picking a mattress. And if you believe that bigger is best, then a King size or oversized mattress could be just what you need.

King size bed frame dimensions offer sleepers ample space, even when co-sleeping with partners, children, and pets. They’re incredibly versatile for people with different sleep patterns and positions, giving every sleeper the room they need to stretch out and roll around without disturbing others.

People who are larger-bodied or have physical limitations that require more room to maneuver themselves may find a King bed or oversized bed beneficial and more comfortable than standard bed sizes
